Walnut Halfmoons

Walnuts are my favorite nuts! If I am not eating them raw with oranges I love to bake using walnuts. This recipe is from my little Greek cook book: "The book of Greek cooking "by Lesley Mackley.

WALNUT PASTRIES

2 1/2 cups AP flour
3/4 cup butter,chilled
1/3 cup powdered sugar
1 egg yolk
1/3 cup water
1 cup coarsely chopped walnuts
1/2 cup chopped citrus peel
1/4 tsp freshly grated nutmeg
3 tablespoon rose water

Into a bowl sift flour.Cut in butter until mixture resembles bread crumbs.

Sift powdered sugar over flour mixture.Stir in powdered sugar, egg yolk and little water to make a firm dough.Cover and refrigerate 30 min.Preheat oven to 350F.Butter a baking sheet. To make the syrup,in a saucepan put superfine sugar and the water.Heat over low heat until sugar has dissolved.Bring to a boil and boil for a few minutes until syrup has reduced and thickened slightly.

In a bowl mix together walnuts, citrus peal and nutmeg.Stir in syrup. On a floured surface thinly roll out pastry.Cut out 4 inch circles.Place a teaspoon of walnut mixture on each circle.Fold in half pressing edges together.Bake for 20 to 30 min until pale golden.Brush with rose water.Coat liberally with powdered sugar.

Notes: I replaced some of the water in the dough with orange blossom water.Cant you tell I love divine combination of walnut and orange flavor by now.

Enjoy! These are great with tea of course but still my favorite is with Turkish coffee.
